Who is this visa for?

This route is for a media representative who is an employee of an overseas media organisation posted to the United Kingdom on a long-term assignment.

If you’re a representative of an overseas business planning to set up its first UK branch, apply for a UK Expansion Worker visa (Global Business Mobility) instead.

If you’re already in the UK as a sole representative, you can still apply to extend your stay.

What are the basic eligibility requirements?

  • You can apply as a representative of an overseas business if you’re an employee of an overseas newspaper, news agency, or broadcasting organisation posted on a long-term assignment to the UK.
  • Media Representative applicants must be based mainly in the UK and be working on a UK long-term assignment. Applicants are usually journalists, but may be other employees, for example: producers, news cameramen, or front-of-camera personnel.
  • In order to qualify as a media representative, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
    • be recruited and employed outside the UK by a company whose headquarters and principal place of business are outside the UK;
    • provide confirmation that they will be representing the parent company in the UK in a long term, full-time role;
    • provide a full description of the parent company’s activities, including details of assets and accounts; and
    • provide evidence to show they can afford to live in the UK, for example copies of bank statements.

How long can I stay in the UK?

If the applicant is applying for entry clearance as a Media Representative or is applying for permission to stay as a Media Representative and does not have, or did not last have, permission on the Representative of an Overseas Business route they will be granted permission for a period not exceeding 3 years.

If the applicant has or last had, permission under the Representative of an Overseas Business route, they will be granted permission for a period not exceeding 2 years.

Can dependants join me on this route?

Family members (‘dependants’) can come with you when you come to the UK on this visa.
A ‘dependant’ is any of the following:

  • your husband, wife, or partner
  • your child under 18
  • your child over 18 if they’re currently in the UK as a dependant on this route

How much does it cost?

  • Application fee if you are applying from outside of the UK – £719.00 per person
  • Application fee if you are applying from inside of the UK – £827.00 per person
  • Immigration Health Surcharge – £1,035.00 per annum for applicants 18 years of age and over, and £776.00 per annum for applicants under the age of 18.

How long does it take?

You can only apply for initial entry clearance from your country of residency, and standard processing time is 3-weeks as at today’s date for a Media Representative of an Overseas Business Visa.

When should I apply?

The earliest you can apply is 3 months before your preferred date of entry to the UK.

What you can and cannot do:

You can:

  • work for your employer full-time
  • study
  • travel abroad and return to the UK
  • bring certain family members with you
  • You can apply for indefinite leave to remain, i.e. settlement under the Media Representative of an Overseas Business category once you have reached 5 years’ continuous leave in the United Kingdom under this route. You cannot have had more than 180 days’ absence from the United Kingdom during any consecutive 12 months of the qualifying period prior to making an application for indefinite leave to remain.

You cannot:

  • Apply for public funds
  • Be self-employed or work for any other business
  • You cannot apply to switch to this visa if you’re currently in the UK:
    • as a visitor
    • on a short-term student visa
    • on a Parent of a Child Student visa
    • on a seasonal worker visa
    • on a domestic worker in a private household visa
    • on immigration bail
    • because you were given permission to stay outside the immigration rules, for example on compassionate grounds.
