Home Office Warns International Students Against Overstaying Visas

September 16, 2025

The UK Government has launched a new campaign directly targeting international students, warning of removal from the UK if they overstay their visas or submit unfounded asylum claims.

The Home Office has contacted over 10,000 students via text and email, with plans to reach up to 130,000, in a proactive effort to curb what it calls an “alarming” rise in study-to-asylum transitions. This marks the first time international students have been contacted directly in such a manner.

Part of a Broader Immigration Clampdown

This move forms part of a wider shift in UK immigration policy, as the government seeks to tighten all legal migration pathways amid sustained political pressure over net migration and asylum accommodation challenges.

Other recent measures include:

· Suspension of the Family Reunion route for refugees.

· A reduction in the post-study Graduate visa duration from 2 years to 18 months.

· Stricter visa sponsorship rules for UK universities, based on refusal and completion rates.
